Miles Austin became the Cowboys big play receiver in 2009 and now he has propelled himself to the top of the wide receiver rankings for 2010.
Going into your 2010 fantasy draft you will find many players on your rankings that were ranked much lower or not even taken on draft day in 2009. There were many players who came out of the woodwork with great years and these players will look to be high quality fantasy stars for owners in the 2010 season. here's our list of players that should put up big numbers in fantasy leagues next season.
Jamal Charles, RB, Kansas City Chiefs
Jamal Charles rushed for 1,120 yards, with a 5.9 yard per carry average in 2009. He also caught 40 passes for 297 yards and 8 total touchdowns. Charles started just 10 games and in his last 8 games he averaged 20 carries for 121 yards per game. Charles is an explosive back that can score from anywhere on the field, on the ground or through the air. If he locks up the feature back role, (and it appears there's no doubt) he should have no problem getting his 20 plus touches each game. With the high upside Charles will bring to the 2010 season expect many owners to use a first round or early second round pick to get him.
Miles Austin, WR, Dallas Cowboys
Miles Austin became the Cowboys true #1 receiver in 2009. Austin led Dallas with 1,320 receiving yards on 81 catches and scored 11 touchdowns. After his coming out party in week 5, when Austin had 10 receptions for 250 yards and 2 td's, he and quarterback Tony Romo became one of the top connections in the NFL. Austin is a playmaker with a nose for the endzone and will be at the top of all wide receiver rankings in 2010. Austin will be drafted early next season as a can't miss WR1.
Sidney Rice, WR, Minnesota Vikings
Sidney Rice had a breakout year for the Vikings in 2009 with the addition of Brett Favre. Rice recorded 83 catches for 1,312 yards and scored 8 touchdowns. He has the ability to go long and make big grabs as well as being a great redzone target. With all the weapons the Vikings have Rice will continue to see single coverage and be a productive WR1 for 2010. If Favre does return next season, the sky is the limit for the 6'4" wideout, but either way Rice has become a top 10 fantasy wide receiver.
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Roethlisberger, who has been considered a QB1 and ranked in the tier right behind Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady, put himself right along side in 2009. Big Ben threw for 4,328 yards with 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 15 games. Now that the Steelers offense has become pass first, he should be a consistant top tier QB going forward. Roethlisberger should be a lock to throw over 4,000 yards and around 30 td's again in 2010. Draft him around round 5 as a top tier QB1.
Fred Jackson, RB, Buffalo Bills
Fred Jackson rushed for 1,062 yards and caught 46 passes for 371 yards in 2009. Jackson proved he was very capable of being the Bills feature back, but if Marshawn Lynch is still in the picture it could hurt the amount of touches he will get. If the Bill's offense improves Jackson will get more opportunities to score and if he can be counted on for 15-20 touches per game he can be a solid fantasy starter. Look to draft Jackson in the middle rounds as a RB2 next season with a big upside if he continues to get the majority of the carries.
Matt Schaub, QB, Houston Texans
Matt Schaub finished 2nd in the NFL with 4770 passing yards, he completed 68% of his passes and threw 29 touchdowns with 15 int's. Schaub is a definate QB1 fantasy stud and should continue to put up big numbers in 2010. With star wide receiver Andre Johnson and a healthy Owen Daniels, Schaub is a good bet to duplicate his 2009 statistics. Take Schaub by the 5th round in all fantasy drafts.
Jermichael Finley, TE, Green Bay Packers
Second year tightend Jermichael Finley came on strong in the second half of the season. Finley had 55 receptions for 676 yards and 5 td's (4 td's in last 6 games). Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers has alot of confidence in his 6'5" tightend and as they become even more comfortable with each other it will help Finley's numbers climb in 2010. Finley should be a starting fantasy tightend next season and you might be able to wait and draft him in the middle rounds.
Mike Sims-Walker, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars
Mike Sims-Walker had a breakout in his 3rd NFL season. He finished the year with 63 catches for 869 yards and 7 touchdowns. Walker was the Jags most productive wideout, but was a little inconsistant at times. Look for Walker to build on this season and continue to be the main target in the Jaguar's passing game. Walker is a solid WR2 for 2010 and should be taken in the 4th round in fantasy drafts.
Brent Celek, TE, Philadelphia Eagles
In 2009 Brent Celek became Donovan McNabb's go to guy. He had 76 grabs for 971 yards and 8 touchdowns. Celek is a reliable target and can be considered to be one of the top fantasy tightends in 2010. Celek was 4th in TE fantasy points this year and there's no reason to believe he won't be in the top 5 again next year. Put Celek towards the top of your 2010 TE rankings and draft with complete confidence.
Jerome Harrison, RB, Cleveland Browns
Hopefully the Cleveland Browns realize that they need to get Harrison's hands on the ball more in 2010. Harrison had 862 yards rushing and 34 catches this year with 7 total td's. The last three games of the season Harrison was used as a work horse and responded with huge games for the Browns. There's still a possibility of a loaded backfield with Chris Jennings and James Davis stealing away carries, but having Harrison as your 2nd back in 2010 should pay nice dividends for your fantasy team.
Visanthe Shiancoe, TE, Minnesota Vikings
Shiancoe had 56 catches for 566 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2009. He has shown he can be a quality starting fantasy tightend and his ability to score TD's makes him a great start on a weekly basis. Consider Shiancoe a top 10 fantasy TE and should be drafted in the mid rounds as your starter for the 2010 season.
Hakeem Nicks, WR, New York Giants
Nicks had a pretty good rookie season with 47 receptions and 790 yards. He has the ability to get deep and proved he will find the endzone with his 6 touchdown catches. He must show more consistency next year to find himself a regular in fantasy lineups, but as he and quarterback Eli Manning become more confident as a duo, he could become a solid WR3 fantasy option. Draft Nicks in the middle rounds as a player with big upside in the 2010 season.
Justin Forsett, RB, Seattle Seahawks
Forsetts 619 yards rushing, 41 receptions and 5 td's should at least give him the chance to battle for the Seahawks starting RB job in 2010. Seattle may still opt to start Julius Jones next season, but Forsett should be able to get a fair share of touches early in the season and eventually take over as the Seahawks premiere back. Draft Forsett in the middle rounds as a RB3 if he doesn't have the starting job, but if he does get the starting job he becomes a very good RB2 fantasy back.
Michael Crabtree, WR, San Francisco 49ers
Michael Crabtree heldout as a rookie and missed the first 5 games of the season. He still managed to have a decent rookie year with 48 catches for 625 yards and 2 touchdowns. With the 49ers looking like a team on the rise, especially if quarterback Alex Smith continues to improve, Crabtree will be one of San Francisco's top offensive threats in 2010. The only question about Crabtree is how many opportunities will he have to hit paydirt since Frank Gore will get his share of scores on the ground and Vernon Davis seems like he has become a redzone monster. We still think Crabtree will be a nice WR3 fantasy option next year.
Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ers
Alex Smith, who only played in 11 games(10 starts) in 2009 still managed to throw for 2350 yards with 18 touchdown passes and 12 int's. With a young 49er receiving core that is going to get better and better, Smith should be a solid QB2 and a reliable backup for your fantasy roster. If wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Josh Morgan, along with tightend Vernon Davis keep progressing Smith's fantasy value will increase fast. Take Smith in the later rounds after you get your starter and hope he will become a factor in 2010.
